Back Again. Question on Multiclassing
« on: September 10, 2010, 10:31:15 pm »

In the games I've played prior to this (there are not many) I have never Multiclassed a character. Was thinking about maybe trying it and wanted a little advice before I get to far into the OC.
My Character:

Human Fighter
Chaotic Good
Now a level 5
Still in Chapter One
After reading the game manual I was thinking about a Rogue.
So here's where I'm asking for your help.
1. Should I bother Multiclassing?
2. If so, Recommendations?
3. And at what level?
Thanks in advance'Posted

Back Again. Question on Multiclassing

Okay, first a disclaimer: I'm anything but an expert on this subject. That being said, I've been enjoying this game for about five years and have learned a bit from some very knowledgeable folks. So, on to your specific questions --

1. Should I bother Multiclassing?
I certainly think it is a good idea, especially since you are interested. I'd say most people agree multiclassed characters are more 'uber', but I think your desire to experiment is really the more important concern here. As the official campaigns are considered to be viable with most any character, this is the time and place to test new ideas in characters.

2. If so, Recommendations?
Well, rogues are great. Since you're interested, I'd say go for it. My first NWN experience was  a pure rogue in the OC, and I loved it! Fighter/rogue is a rather classic combination; check the builds from the Epic Character Builders guild, if you would care to.

3. And at what level?
I'm really getting out of my depth here, but I would say 7th level would be good, at least to pick up skills such as Tumble and Use Magic Device (UMD). Since these skills improve in increments of 5 points, 7th level is a natural (allowing for an investment of 10 points). To play it safe, I should mention the concept of skill dumping (in case you're not familiar with it);  a character with multiple classes may buy skills at the lower "class Skill" rate (as opposed to the "Cross class" rate) and buy up to character level + 3, not just class level + 3. Therefore, a character gaining level 7 and choosing rogue may buy 10 points in Tumble (level 7 + 3), all at the rogue's class Skill rate. This "loophole" allows for the accumulation of greater skill levels than would be possible otherwise.

I hope this helps a bit, at least until others add their two cents worth. Above all, I hope you enjoy your NWN experience. '<img'>

Keep in mind that the OC only provides about 17 or 18 max levels so if your character is to be specifically used in these modules you can just choose whatever fits the situation (muticlassing, that is).

Of course, there are some class-specific quests in the OC that you may have missed and could now qualify for.

If you are intending a single class beyond fighter, XP penalty won't be a factor.  More than one extra class could force a human to keep those two secondary classes within 1 level.  But a human with one secondary standard class and one secondary prestige class will never receive XP penalty, should you go that way.

Decide what you want to achieve when you multiclass.  Stealth? Dumps? Trap handling? High sneak damage? Rogue defensive feats? There are lots of prescriptions that a few levels of rogue can fill.

If you want good stealth, you may want more levels of rogue and a Dex build to take advantage.  However, you would need to set your ability bias at creation so that may no longer be a viable option if you have gone with Str.

Bard ninja'd me for the leveling suggestions except for one consideration:  If your Cha modifier is negative you may want to delay dumping a bit later (usually one level is enough) just so you need not depend on Cha-boosting items (re:UMD dump).

My advice is just experiment. Read the Wiki rather than the manual to understand the advantages of different classes.  Use your instinct and have fun learning how classes interact.  It is wide open.

Used to do it in the Goldbox day (all Hlaf-Elves,all 18s,all magic users/Cleric.fighters '<img'>) don't care for it any more

Wanted to play the OC ans a Xencian Monk (Monk able to channel raw magic into blasts or spells) but there was no such class (lol) so I went through the game as a Sorcerer and dropped in some "studded gloves" for the PC's ability to use "iron finger"(acupressure combat) using a self-imposed honor system to upgrade the "iron finger" ability with drop ins (1 death blow per creature type per 5 levels DC20(Undead LVL1,constructs LVL5,Outsiders LVL10,Abominations LVL15),stun dc20,hold dc20, 1d6+1 with +1 per 5 levels(1d6+1 LVL1,1d6+2 LVL5,1d6+3 LVL10,1d6+4 LVL15)
