Help with a Rogue/Ranger/Monk Build
« on: October 15, 2014, 04:42:54 pm »

I'm planning to start SoU / HotU in the next while.  I've been looking on the Epic Character Build site, and drew on this build and that one.

My aim is to have a high-level rogue with plenty of tactical options (sneak attacks up close or at a distance, trapping), with favoured enemy feats to help against undead and constructs as well as extra kama attacks and IKD to pile on the hurt. And the

I wanted to be able to use kamas to get the benefit of the Monk bonus attacks, otherwise I would have gone halfling.  The starting stats are odd, but I couldn't fit in three the SC feats otherwise.

Build attached below.  Comments appreciated!

Help with a Rogue/Ranger/Monk Build
« Reply #1 on: October 15, 2014, 08:27:03 pm »

http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Concealment

Your 30% concealment is effectively only 9% against an opponent with Bliund Fight. With Self Concealment, you need to either get all 5, or you might as well not bother.

Also, I'd suggest using Fighter instead of Ranger. 10 levels of Fighter gives you 6 feats: 3 for dual-weilding, 2 for Weapon Spec/Epic Weapon Spec, and 1 more (Epic Prowess or Armor Skin).

Here's a build I played with great success in SoU, HotU, and then the Sands of Fate series, which brought me the rest of the way to level 40.

Help with a Rogue/Ranger/Monk Build
« Reply #2 on: October 15, 2014, 09:12:17 pm »

Thanks Empyre for pointing out the SC issue.  I like your build better than mine in the end.  I have a bit of an allergy to taking Fighter levels (losing skill points), but my build has only 5 levels of Rogue by Level 20.  I like the Ranger / Monk synergy concept, but the only way I could get the benefit of the class bonus feats before level 20ish was to squeeze them in up front.

And that destroys Rogue-like gameplay for over half the life of the build! Aaaaargh!!!

Love the thought process behind the character.

My personal preference, and that's all it is, is to be essentially one class , with a couple or so of other levels thrown in to make it more interesting.

For a basic Ranger, one level of Monk at level 2 can pay dividends.  Plenty of benefits, with only a -1 BAB and -2 hps as negatives, compared to a level 2 Ranger.

Unless you desperately need OL, DD and UMD (and they are incredibly useful in some modules), along with Monk, I would take a single level of Shadow Dancer instead of rogue.  Hide in plain sight is almost as useful as invisibility at will, sometimes better.

Another melee option is to take 10 levels of Ranger and 2 levels of Shadow dancer in your first 12 levels.  You don't get all the benefits of a monk, such as cleave or a wisdom bonus to a/c, but SD do get several useful abilities at level 2 including evasion and uncanny dodge.  Shadow Dancers share the same feat requirements as Weapon Masters, and humans taking the right feats (and skills) can make WM at level 13.  A Weapon Master/ Ranger is a deadly combination, because the Ranger can favour foes the WM cannot critical eg Undead and Constructs.

I've always considered Rangers, Assassins, Rogues, Shadow Dancers and Monks to be variants on the same theme.  As long as you take 9 levels of Ranger (which gives you 2 attacks with your off hand), by level 20, you will have 4 basic attacks per round with any combination of the above.  Personally, by level 20, I would be a level 15 Ranger, level 1 Shadow dancer (taken at level 8), and a level 4 Monk (taken at level 2, 7, 12 and 17 to maximise the tumble a/c bonus).

What I also like about your post is that it is campaign specific.  The best class combo does not exist, because different modules require different character attributes to survive.  The better character for A Dance with Rogues will not be the same for Gladiatrix as an example.

Help with a Rogue/Ranger/Monk Build

@nick - I'm coming round to your position of playing mostly single class with a few levels of other to round things out, especially if starting from level 1 up.  That said, playing Siege of the Heavens (L40) also offers the chance to try different balances. May tweak my build and then compare to Empyre's on different run-throughs.
